Movies You Should See

I saw two movies this last year that I had never heard of before seeing them and have been thinking about them ever since. When a movie sticks with you like that, and not because you resent the 2 hours of your life it stole away, then chances are it was worth seeing. These two certainly were. They are both odd and not for everyone, but check them out if you're tired of movies with huge effects and even bigger holes in the story line and character development.

Everything Is Illuminated: This movie stars Frodo from Lord of the Rings. This time around, he wears shoes and shows up as a Jewish kid with a strange compulsion to collect and organize who heads off to the Ukraine to find out who his family was. Along the way he meets the most interesting tourguide family you can imagine and they all find more than they were looking for. It is very well written and unlike most modern movies, it takes its time. That's not just a movie nerd's way of saying "slow", but it lets you enjoy the quirkiness of the characters and the beauty of the countryside without beating you over the head with rapid fire images. In the end there are 3 reasons to see this movie:
1. The Ukrainian tour guide family is next level funny. Really good stuff.
2. It's not like what you're use to watching...in a good way.
3. The unexpected ending is genuine and touching and makes you think.

Dummy: This one stars Adrien Brody who is one of the few remaining actors who has "see it just because he's in it" status in my book. Sadly, guys like DeNiro and Pacino, who started that category, have long sense had their status revoked. But now, Adrien Brody, Jack Black, Philip Seymore Hoffman, Selma Hayek, Charlize Theron, Brad Pitt, Will Ferrell and Maria Bello take their place, but even that list shrinks nearly every year. Brody is hanging in there though.

The Thin Red Line, Liberty Heights, The Affair of the Necklace, The Pianist, The Jacket, The Villiage and now: Dummy. The guy just doesn't miss much. This movie co-stars Mila Jovovovovovich the "big bada boom" girl from the underrated 5th Element, looking very unglam. This isn't a movie about stupid people....sort of....its about a guy with one of those puppets who talks when your lips barely move. It's actually about a lonely guy still living at home who begins to grow up in some painful and hilarious ways. It's funny and sad and very enjoyable to watch.

Those are the movie recommendations for the week. This week I hope to watch North Country, Fun with Dick and Jane and maybe Pride and Prejudice and I'll report back on those after I see them.
